After a long day at work, people have various ways of spending their free time. Some people might do something active, like play a recreational sport or go to the gym. Other people might like to just relax in front of the television or read a good book. However they spend their evenings, the usual goal is to go to sleep at the end of the night and wake up refreshed the next morning.
It all might seem easy to those people who can sleep easily, but those people who suffer from insomnia can only wish they were that lucky. Insomnia is not actually a sleep disorder in itself. Rather, it is a symptom of a larger sleep disorder. What the sleep disorder itself is depends on the individual person.
Insomnia is marked by not being able to sleep for weeks at a time. Or, the person might be able to fall asleep, but not actually be able to stay asleep. One of the most common causes of insomnia is stress. When a person is suffering from a stressful event at work or in their private life, they go to bed at night with racing thoughts, and it is often these thoughts that cause the sleepless nights.
Obviously, in such a situation the sleeplessness is caused by some sort of an anxiety disorder. Until the right dosage of an anti-anxiety medication is found, the patient will most likely be given lorazepam or clonazepam. Both of these are mild tranquilizers that will put the patient to sleep. However, like many sleep aids, there is a high risk of dependency, so the doctor will only allow the patient to take these for a couple of months.
For those people who do not want to take medication, they have the option of perhaps trying hypnosis. During an hypnosis session, there are various methods that can be subconsciously introduced. For example, the doctor administering the hypnosis might say something like, “Each time you go to bed at night, you will be able to fall asleep quickly.” People who are suffering from sleepless nights might not always do so because of an emotional issue. There could be a hidden physical problem as well.
Say, for example, that a person has had difficulty sleeping because of nasal or chest congestion. It could be that he or she is allergic to something that is in the room. Sometimes, it is as local as their own pillow! If the pillow happens to be made out of goose feathers, that can be a potent allergen. Then again, perhaps the air quality is poor in the person’s bedroom, in which case an air purifier or humidifier might be helpful.
It is important to note that sleepless nights can have a lot to do with a person’s diet. For example, if a person tends to eat dinner late at night and then tries to go to sleep immediately afterwards, it can result in not only sleeping, but digestion problems. So, if you have had trouble sleeping, don’t have any more restless nights; be sure to speak with your doctor about the safest treatment options.
