Zyban (bupropion) is an antidepressant medicine that has been found to aid in the stopping of smoking. It is used to help people stop smoking by reducing cravings and other withdrawal effects. Other brands of bupropion (Aplenzin, Budeprion, Forfivo XL, Wellbutrin) are used to treat major depressive disorder or seasonal affective disorder.
Information about Zyban:
This medicine is helps people who are dependent on nicotine to give up smoking. It is used in combination with motivational support. It is not a form of nicotine replacement therapy. It takes a few days to work so it is usually started while you are still smoking.
You should not take this medicine if you have seizures, an eating disorder, or if you have suddenly stopped using alcohol, seizure medication, or sedatives. If you take bupropion for depression, do not also take Zyban to quit smoking.
How should I take Zyban?
Take Zyban exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Too much of this medicine can increase your risk of a seizure.
When first starting Zyban you may continue to smoke for about 1 week after you start the medicine. Set a date to quit smoking during the second week of treatment. Talk to your doctor if you are having trouble quitting after you have used Zyban for at least 7 weeks.

Serious side effect:
o seizure (convulsions)
o fast heartbeats
o fever, swollen glands, rash or itching, joint pain, or general ill feeling
o confusion, trouble concentrating, hallucinations, unusual thoughts or behavior or
o severe skin reaction — fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling.
Less serious Zyban side effects may include:
o dry mouth, nausea, stomach pain
o headache, dizziness, ringing in your ears
o sore throat, muscle pain
o mild itching or skin rash, increased sweating, increased urination
Who should NOT take Zyban?
Do not take this mediction if you:
* are allergic to bupropion or to any of the ingredients of this medication
* are currently taking thioridazine (an antipsychotic medication) or have taken it in the past 2 weeks
* are having abrupt withdrawal issues from alcohol, benzodiazepines (e.g., diazepam, clonazepam, lorazepam), or other sedatives (e.g., phenobarbital)
* are taking another medication that contains bupropion (e.g., Wellbutrin XL® or Wellbutrin® SR)
* have a seizure disorder
* have or have had an eating disorder (bulimia or anorexia nervosa)
* have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAO inhibitor; e.g., phenelzine, tranylcypromine) within the past 2 weeks
Storage:
Store at room temperature. Protect from heat, light and moisture. Keep away from reach of children.
