Halsey broke up with long-time boyfriend in G-Eazy in July, and even though they’ve since reconciled, this song is definitely about the time they spent apart. At one point, Halsey sings that she gave love “about a hundred tries,” but she let someone else’s demons into her own mind. It’s deep stuff, guys.
The bridge of the song is an inverse on Justin Timberlake’s classic “Cry Me a River,” in case you were wondering.
The song is the first she’s ever written under her birth name, Ashley Frangipane. She told Zane Lowe in an interview on Beats 1 Radio that it’s her most personal song yet.
“I think that’s what I’m kind of getting at is that it’s like it’s not protected by some character or some subplot,” she said. “It’s like this is really me talking about my life. It kind of gave me like an existential crisis as an artist a little bit, because I’ve prided myself on being an artist who’s authentic and writes about her life and all that stuff. And then when I made this and I felt just how bad it hurt.”
