Warning: The following story contains spoilers for Peaky Blinders season 5.
Season five of Peaky Blinders premiered almost two years after season four, but the season was well worth the wait. Season five included a shocking finale and a surprise return by a character that everyone thought was dead, and fans are eager to find out what happens next.
And while there hasn’t been news of a renewal for the next season yet, series creator Steven Knight has previously said that he would love to make seven seasons of the show, so we can probably expect to see an announcement about the Peaky Blinders gang soon.
But until then, here’s what we know about season six of Peaky Blinders.
When will season 6 of Peaky Blinders premiere?
Peaky Blinders usually takes about a year to a year-and-a-half of time between seasons, so we would have expected to see season six of Peaky Blinders sometime in late 2020 or early 2021.
However, in April production on season six was shut down on day 23 of the 78-day shoot due to the coronavirus pandemic. In a recent Instagram Q&A, director Anthony Byrne said he didn’t know when filming would resume, and he shared a message from Cillian Murphy: “Sending love and fortitude to Peaky fans everywhere. We will be back as soon as we can, I promise, causing chaos and knocking heads as usual,” Murphy said. “I want to send a special thank you to all our widely talented crew for all their hard work and their talent, for their forbearance and patience during this time.”
Bryne later said that season 6 may not premiere until 2022. “That feels achievable. Whether that’s true or not, I have no idea. If we did start shooting in January [2021] we wouldn’t finish until May or June and then it’s another six months of editing.”
In August 2019, Byrne told British GQ that he would “start properly on series six in early November. Then we start shooting early next year, is the plan.” In January 2020, Knight told BBC that he had just finished writing the script for the sixth season. “I’ve just finished writing series six and it’s the best yet, but we always say that,” he revealed.
Later that month, Deadline officially reported that the sixth season would start shooting in March, and director Anthony Byrne revealed that the first episode of the season would be titled “Black Day.”

What is the plot of season 6 of Peaky Blinders?
Season five ended with Tommy’s failed assassination plot against Sir Oswald Mosley. For season six, we can expect to see how Tommy continues to deal with that failure, and he’ll probably try to find out who the mole in the Shelby operation is.
The season will take place in the early 1930s, when the world was still reeling from the effects of the Great Depression. In the United Kingdom, unemployment and poverty levels were on the rise, and they didn’t rebound until the end of the decade.
Bryne also revealed that the first episode of season six will pick up directly where season five left off. “The very first image you will see will be back in that field, with a gun to his [Tommy’s] head…I promise it will be worth the wait.”
Who will be part of the cast for season 6 of Peaky Blinders?
Cillian Murphy will almost be certainly be back in the title role of Tommy Shelby, and the rest of the Shelby family escaped season five unscathed. Season six will include Paul Anderson as Arthur Shelby, Helen McCrory as Aunt Polly, Sophie Rundle as Ada Shelby, Finn Cole as Michael Gray, Harry Kirton as Finn Shelby, and Natasha O’Keeffe as Lizzie Stark.
Sadly, we won’t be seeing Aidan Gillen as Aberama Gold or Kingsley Ben-Adir as Colonel Ben Younger, as both characters were killed during season five.
Recently, Paul Anderson posted some old photos from set on Instagram, and he tagged a few celebs including David Beckham and Guy Ritchie, leading fans to believe that Beckham might have a cameo in the sixth season.

Another famous face that viewers could see in season six is Julia Roberts, as she’s rumored to be eyeing a role as one of the members of Gina Gray’s family.
And while Bryne didn’t confirm if Roberts will be joining the show, he did reveal that a new female character will give Tommy a run for his money: “I haven’t seen a character like her in Peaky before. I won’t say who she is, but she certainly gives Tommy a run for his money. She challenges him in a different way basically. She’s certainly not a protagonist and I don’t know if she’s an antagonist. It’s similar to [Oswald] Mosley…they don’t have guns or a gang, but they have an ideology that’s like a virus and it’s more dangerous than anything. She’s a great character and we’re really close to casting her, as well.”
However, one character’s fate that is totally unclear is Tom Hardy’s Alfie Solomons. Alfie was thought to be dead at the end of season four, but it was revealed that he was still alive at the end of season five. But since Alfie was involved in the failed assassination plot, we can be cautiously optimistic that he’ll appear in season six.
