Award shows that feature live performances have a history of delivering all the musical goods our hearts desire, yes, but they can also get kind of…awkward sometimes. It’s not a bad thing! But let’s be honest, anything live on TV like an award show risks a few bumps.
When it comes to the 2020 MTV VMAs and you throw in a whole pandemic, performers pulling in and out of the lineup, and, oh yeah, the fact that the show’s going down in approx. 20 different locations, it was bound to be a night to remember from the jump. Here are some of the best/worst moments of the whole evening.
Let’s start with the snubs
Before we touch the show itself, it needs to be said that the 2020 VMAs nominations left some surprising artists on the cutting room floor. The VMA snubs this year awkwardly caused even more uproar than normal, especially in the cases of Dua Lipa and Harry Styles, who received exactly zero major recognition. What makes this especially 😬 though is this rumor that after passing them over, the VMAs allegedly asked them to perform anyway…

Let’s just say that’s not happening.
Lady Gaga was compared to Miss Sandy
LOOOL, leave Gaga alone! But TBH, the resemblance actually is uncanny, and if anyone is going to get super creative with a red carpet look, it’s Gaga.

That moment when MTV lied about the VMAs being live…
This is why I have trust issues. Apparently some celebs didn’t even fly to NYC for this “live” show. According to Page Six, most of the performances, red carpet interviews, and award presentations were filmed days in advance—which is 100 percent understandable considering the pandemic. But, why lie about it?
Some of the winners were leaked
Okay, someone’s getting fired. Fans quickly realized that certain winners (*cough* Lady Gaga *cough*) were leaked before they even had the chance to accept their moon people. Talk about a spoiler alert.

Keke Palmer hit on Keke Palmer
It’s like a car crash: You don’t want to look, but you also can’t look away. Still hilarious though.

JoJo and Francia Raisa did their best to keep up with BTS
This might be the most relatable moment of the night. Tag yourself—I’m JoJo! In all seriousness, I can’t stop watching this vid. A for effort.

The entire show, tbh
It’s not MTVs fault the show was cringey at times. Between the fake audience screams, green screens, and just overall lack of fun candid moments, this year’s VMAs left something to be desired. But hey, at least it happened at all, and we did get some pretty epic performances so it wasn’t all bad, right?
You’ll get ’em next year, VMAs.
