Anxiety Medications — Side Effects

By | September 22, 2016

Medications can be very effective for relieving the feeling of anxiety when it overwhelms you. More medications are being discovered to combat this problem all the time. However, all medications do is temporarily relieve the problem. For a long lasting cure it takes more than just popping a pill or two. Also medications can have some serious side effects.

Antidepressants, beta-blockers, and benezodiazephones, are some of the different drugs used to give you relief from anxiety. There are so many different drugs out there, and they all do their jobs relieving you of symptoms, but only temporarily. Easing your anxiety when suffering with it, doesn’t get rid of it completely. You need to find the root of the problem that is causing you to deal with anxiety. You don’t want to feel ok, quit your medications, and then your back to square one because you never dealt with the true problem.

Always check your medication’s side effects. Many drugs for anxiety are known to have severe side effects that are harmful. Some medications are also very physically addicting, in which you’d have a tough time stopping them once you’ve started them. Anxiety medications could be a big help when trying to cope with anxiety, but they may not be a good idea for everyone.

Ativan, valium, xanax, klonopin, are benzodiazepines that are commonly used to treat anxiety. They are fast acting, giving you quick relief. This is why they are great for mild anxiety or even panic attacks. These drugs though, do have a downside.

Before you start using these medications, you need to be made aware of the way they work. These drugs work by slowing down the activity in your brain. Knowing that, it’s understandable that they have side effects. Awareness of these side effects are important to know before you start using them for your anxiety.

Higher dosages create stronger side effects. Sleepiness, sensations of walking in a fog, lack of coordination, etc are just a few of the many side effects you might feel if you are taking these drugs. Everyday life can become hard to do if you are constantly feeling hungover.

Build up in your system may happen, because benzodiazepines break down slowly into your body. This may cause you to be over loaded eventually, or over medicated. You may appear drunk or heavily sedated. Let’s look into all the side effects of this group of medications.

Slurred speech, clumsiness, depression, being disoriented, and blurred vision, memory loss, bad judgment, dizziness, sleepiness, and feeling like you are not yourself. These are obvious reasons why you should always be cautious about taking the right dosage at the right time. Always follow your doctors orders.

Remember to always be sure that you double check that there are no cross reactions with other drugs before taking it. Serious side effects from mixing two of the wrong drugs can be avoided when you proceed with caution. The end result could make the drugs you are taking less effective, or you can even having a hard time breathing. If you feel drowsy when you take any medication, never drive while taking it. You could end up in a bad car accident, hurting yourself or someone else.

Remember to combine other therapies together while taking your medications with anxiety. Medications alone will not bring you permanent relief.
