Living With Anxiety – Cope or Cure?

By | July 8, 2016

Most people that live in modern societies live under stress producing conditions. Learning to recognize and cope with anxiety are keys to successful living. Many proclaim to have cures for anxiety. Anxiety can’t be completely cured but it can be treated successfully. Anxiety is a naturally occurring emotion required for survival.

Anxiety in high levels however is painful and debilitating. Cures and therapies for anxiety fall into three general categories; behavioral therapy, pharmacological therapy and herbal remedies.

In North America the pharmacological industry has strong political and economic roots. The resulting relationship with anxiety treatment is that many medicines are prescribed for anxiety as an end all to symptoms of anxiety.

Medicines help to reduce the symptoms of anxiety but they do not cure the disease. If use of the medicine is discontinued the symptoms of anxiety often return. Combining other therapies for anxiety is a much more forceful approach to containing anxiety.

Behavioral therapy comes close to a cure for anxiety. Behavioral or cognitive therapy teaches thought recognition in relationship to anxiety. Cognitive therapy happens one on one and in group settings.

Patients learn to recognize healthy versus unhealthy thoughts and thought reconstruction. Bad thoughts are identified and exchanged for healthy thoughts through the use of positive self-talk. Cue cards are used to prompt positive thoughts. Relaxation is a major part of behavioral therapy. The philosophy is that where the body goes, the mind will follow. If the body is relaxed, the mind will eventually relax in response.

There are many herbal remedies for anxiety. Popular herbs for combating anxiety include, kava kava root, passionflower, Valerian root, and Epsom salt baths. The first three herbs are good for alleviating the symptoms of anxiety when used as an extract or tea in very specific amounts. Epsom salt baths are good for relaxation and cleansing the skin of toxins.

If you are interested in using herbal remedies as part of your personal cure for anxiety it is important to consult your physician or psychiatrist to confirm that these may not interact with any of your current medications.

Cures for anxiety are as individual in nature as the experience of anxiety is unique to each individual coping with it. There is no cure all for anxiety but their are ways to cope and relegate anxiety to it’s appropriate position on the back burner of your emotional life. Work with your health care professional, family and friends to develop a plan for controlling your anxiety. Anxiety doesn’t have to be debilitating. There are ways to cope and a personal cure is not out of the question when a combination of treatments is adopted.
